Treatment
There is no cure for ADHD but treatment can help to get rid of the symptoms which greatly reduces the trouble of our daily life.
ADHD can be treated through the use of medication or therapy, but in most cases the best method will be the combination of both.
Usually an child expert or mental disorder expert conducts the treatment and patients are expected to go for trials regularly.
 
Medicine
4 types of medicine have been issued licence for ADHD treatment-
 

  • Methylphenidate
  • Dexamfetamine
  • Lisdexamfetamine

 

  • Atomoxetine

 
These medicines don’t cure permanently but help patients to concentrate, to control emotions, to be calm and to learn and practice new skills.
Some medications need to take every day, some during the school only. Sometimes medicines are advised to stop, to see if they are still necessary or not.
These medicines are licensed for the children and teenagers both. Atomoxetine are also licensed for adults who had ADHD in childhood.
If you are not infected with ADHD until you are an adult then your specialist will discuss with you what kind of medication and therapy is appropriate for you.
If you or your child has been prescribed these pills, then at first you may be given lower dose of medicines which may be increased later.
To ensure the medical treatments are working properly or not and to find out if there are any side effects or problems, you and your child need to see the doctor for regular tests.
How long you should continue this treatment will be discussed by your specialist. However, in most cases the treatment should be continued as long as it helps.
Methylphenidate
Methylphenidate is mostly used in the treatment of ADHD. This is a type of incentive
drug which works through the growth and function of the brain, especially in those parts which helps to control the concentration and behavior.
More than six years old child or teenagers diagnosed with ADHD can use Methylphenidate. Although adults are not licensed to use Methylphenidate but it can be taken under the intensive supervision of the specialists.
This medicine is available in two types of tablet form. One starts working very fast but does not have any long term effect. This is why it should be taken two to three times a day. Another one does long term work for which it should be taken once a day in the morning and helps to get rid of all day dose of medicines.
Side effects of Methylphenidate:

  • A slight rise in blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Loss of appetite which decreases the weight and makes health very weak.
  • Sleep interruption
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Sudden mood changes for no reason.

Dexamfetamine
Dexamfetamine is a type of stimulant medications which works in the same way as Methylphenidate, activates that part of the brain which controls concentration and behavior.
Dexamfetamine is used for the children more than three years old and teenagers. However, it is not licensed for adults but it can be used under intensive supervision of the experts.
Usually one tablet is taken once or twice a day. Dexamfetamine is also available as syrup.
Side effects of Dexamfetamine:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Sudden mood changes for no reason.
  • Violent and aggressive attitude
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Lisdexamfetamine
Lisdexamfetamine and Dexamfetamine are the same type of medicines and also work in the same way.
Children more than six years old diagnosed with ADHD can use it, if the treatment of Methylphenidate does not work. You can take this medication if your doctor thinks that you will be benefited from it. Lisdexamfetamine is a kind of capsule which you or your child can take once a day.
Side effects of  Lisdexamfetamine:

  • Loss of appetite which decreases the weight and makes health very weak.
  • Aggressive attitude
  • Lethargy
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting

Atomoxetine
Atomoxetine works differently from other ADHD drugs. It is known as the Selective Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitor (SNRI) which means it will increase in the chemical substances like Noradrenaline of brain. These chemicals in the brain cells exchange information and help to increase the concentration and control emotions.
Atomoxetine can be used for the children who are more than six years old and teenagers. It is licensed for those adults who continued to take medicines from their childhood. Those who are newly diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, this medication is not licensed for them to use but experts can suggest to use it under their supervision.

Atomoxetine can be found in capsule form which you or your child can take once or twice a day.
Side effects of Atomoxetine:

  • A slight rise in blood pressure and heart rate.
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Sleep interruption
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Disturbed

There are more serious side effects such as suicidal thoughts, damage of liver and so we need to be more careful about this.
Therapy
Along with medicines, therapy can be helpful for the ADHD affected children, teenagers and adults. Some other problems may arise with the symptoms of ADHD such as concern or behavior problems. Therapy is an effective treatment for these problems.
Therapies are used in the treatment of ADHD are described below:
Psycho-education
Here you and your child will be discussed about ADHD and how it is affecting you. This therapy helps children, teenagers and adults to diagnose ADHD and also helps patients to cope with and live the situation.
Behaviour therapy
This therapy helps ADHD affected children with care, teacher and parents are also included in this. Behavior therapy usually works with behavior problems. In this way, prizes are arranged for the children to encourage them to control their behavior. Find out those types of behavior which you want to encourage such as sitting at the table to eat. Then give your child any selected small prize for good behavior and take any particular opportunity from him for bad behavior. What role the teachers should play in the behavior management, what they have to do and how they can praise and encourage children to improve will be notified to the teachers.
Teaching and training programs for parents
If your child has ADHD, then you should see a consultant or psychologist along with his treatment. It is very important for parents to know about the problem as much as possible and also how to deal with this problem. Though there is no specific training for the program, parents and teachers of  the ADHD affected children can learn about the problem and it’s solution from the consultants or psychologists. If you know about behavior management, then it will help you to develop your skills so that you can help your child and improve your relationship with him.
Training for social skills
This training teaches patients how to behave in different types of social situation and how their behaviors are affecting others. It is taught by “Roll Playing” where they are shown an act based on these types of situation.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT
Cognitive behavioral therapy is a kind of conversation therapy which helps to solve problems by thinking and changing behaviors. Here the therapist tries to figure out what your child feels in different situations and brings changes in their behavior gradually. CBT can be conducted separately under the supervision of a therapist or a group.
Other possible treatments
There are some other methods of treatment of ADHD which may be beneficial for some patients. For example, plan to take specific meals by avoiding some foods and to eat complementary foods. However, there is no guaranty that these methods will work and so no one should try these methods without a doctor’s advice.
Wholesome
ADHD affected people should eat healthy and balanced foods and should not eat anything without their doctor’s advice. Many people find a link between the symptoms of ADHD and different types of food. For example, some people believe sugar, food coloring and caffeine is responsible for too much annoyance and some believe that wheat and dairy products may increase the symptoms of endure privation.
If this is the case, then you should keep a diary and write what you eat and drink and how your behavior changes because of this. You can discuss this with your doctor and your doctor might suggest you to go to a nutritionist.
Do not change your (or your child’s) food system without consulting a doctor.
Supplements
Some studies have suggested that omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are beneficial for people who are infected with ADHD, although the evidence is inadequate.
