BMI

 
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. BMI is a measure of body fat calculated by person’s weight in relation to his/her height and applies to mostly adult men and women aged 18 years and above. BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. It is age independent and same for both sexes.
 
BMI is used for:
BMI is used as a screening tool to indicate body fatness or health of an individual. It measures whether a person is underweight, overweight, obese or a healthy weight for their height. It is not accurate enough to use as a diagnostic tool but is an indicator for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
It is an inexpensive and easy to perform method of screening body fatness.
 
Formula of BMI calculation:
BMI = Weight (kg)/Height^2 (m^2)    
 
Different Ranges of BMI:
As per WHO standard, the range of BMI is as follows:
Healthy: 18.5 to 24.9
Overweight: 25 to 29.9
Obese: 30 to 39.9
Morbidly Obese: >= 40
(BMI less than 18 should be considered as underweight)
